My Teenage Years With the Early Internet
First, I was an early adopter of online communities and social networking as a teenager, long before most adults fully understood how these platforms would shape behavior, identity, and relationships. The internet was new, exciting, and largely unregulated. Like many kids of my generation, I was immediately drawn to the stimulation and novelty of digital entertainment. Even simple video games—like the original Mario Brothers—could be incredibly absorbing, and I began to see how easily technology could capture attention and become all-consuming.
But beyond games, I also encountered the confusing and sometimes dangerous side of early internet culture. As a teenager exploring AOL chat rooms, I interacted with adults in spaces that were clearly not designed with young users’ safety in mind. I was sent lavish gifts and encouraged to exchange photos and letters through the mail, all under the guise of friendly online conversations. At the time, it felt exciting and flattering. Looking back now as an adult—and as a parent—I recognize how inappropriate and unsafe those interactions truly were.
What struck me most was that my parents sensed something was wrong, yet the internet was so new that they struggled to explain exactly why these situations were dangerous. There were no clear guidelines, no parental controls, and very little public awareness about the risks young people faced online. That experience left a lasting impression on me. I saw firsthand how quickly technology could blur boundaries, influence behavior, and place young people in situations they were not developmentally prepared to navigate.
Witnessing the Shift in My Classroom
As a teacher, I had a front-row seat to what smartphones and social media were doing to kids. Over time, focus declined, respect eroded, and the ability to sustain attention on anything challenging quietly disappeared. Students arrived sleep-deprived and emotionally dysregulated, having spent hours online the night before. Most educators sensed something had fundamentally changed, but few tools existed to address it at its root. It became clear to me that what we were seeing wasn’t an educational problem — it was a digital lifestyle problem.
When It Became Personal as a Parent
Like many families, I trusted the messaging that early digital media was educational and beneficial. I introduced programs like Baby Einstein when my children were young and allowed video games as they grew older, believing they were harmless or even helpful. When my son began to struggle academically, socially, and emotionally, I searched everywhere for answers. As a single mom, I spent enormous amounts of time and money on tutoring, therapy, and interventions — believing his challenges were primarily tied to his autism diagnosis.
What I eventually discovered was something most families still don’t know: he had quietly developed a serious gaming addiction, one that took root in the absence of clear boundaries and public awareness about the neurological effects of excessive screen time. There were almost no resources available. I felt alone, overwhelmed, and frustrated — and that frustration became the catalyst for everything that followed, inspiring Screen Time Clinic®
Mission to Make Sure No One Else Suffered
I began studying, testing, and rebuilding from the ground up—not just for my own kids, but for other moms who were quietly struggling in the same way. What I found was both alarming and empowering: when the digital environment is addressed correctly, children can recover, families can reconnect, and behavior can dramatically improve.
That realization led to a defining decision—I stepped away from my teaching career and devoted myself fully to building something that didn’t yet exist.
Screen Time Clinic was born out of that mission.
Not as a personal brand, but as a movement. A grassroots organization designed to reach far beyond my individual capacity—training and certifying educators, equipping professionals, and creating a standardized, ethical approach to digital wellness that families could trust. Every educator trained through Screen Time Clinic is held to the same high standard: to provide do-no-harm, evidence-informed guidance that protects childhood, strengthens families, and restores what excessive screen time has taken away.
What started as one mother’s fight for her child has grown into a global effort to help families reclaim their homes, their relationships, and their children’s potential.
